About Fede
I have a purpose that’s closely aligned with my company’s: to serve and promote quality: the quality of the software, the quality of our work, the quality of relationships within the team and with clients, and quality of life. I’m proud of what I do, and that’s why I like to share it, to spread it and multiply it (this is something that motivates me to write this blog, give talks, write books, etc.).
Summary:
- I define my role as a Quality Engineer. I am one of the founders of ** Abstracta, where I have worked on the creation of GXtest, Apptim (formerly known as Monkop), and Abstracta Academy.
- I hold a degree in Computer Science from the University of the Republic of Uruguay and a PhD in #testing from the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Spain, where I lived for three years under the guidance of Macario Polo and Beatríz Pérez, in the Alarcos group led by Mario Piattini.
- I have continued working and researching in performance testing, test automation, and functional testing since 2005.
- I am a fan of purposeful productivity, focusing on personal organization, agile methodologies, and DevOps.
- In recent years, I have been very enthusiastic about everything related to the latest in generative artificial intelligence.
- I wrote what I consider to be the first practical testing book in Spanish, of which I released a new version in 2024, and I contribute to various blogs. I frequently write on this site www.federico-toledo.com and on the Abstracta blog in English and in Spanish.
- I was one of the founders of NahualUY, and I participated for several years as an organizer of the TestingUY event, and of various meetups such as Abstracta Tech Talks, TestingUy, Nahual, and Softskills.
- Since 2022, I’ve been focused on organizing Quality Sense Conf together with WOPR Latam, bringing the conference and workshop to different Latin American countries.
- To date, I have collaborated with testing research and teaching at various universities (UdelaR, UCUDAL, and UDE in Uruguay, UCLM in Spain, and CNR in Italy).
- I feel truly committed to testing, passionate about agile methodologies, DevOps, and artificial intelligence.
This is me, in case you see my face on any forum, community, or blog:
I like to spread the word, write, speak, discuss, and share about any topic related to quality or testing. I like quality. I like to observe and give feedback, in general, not just with software.
My academic experience showed me that I shouldn’t go beyond teaching. Academic research isn’t for me; I like corporate research better. I need to see things working.
Although I was born in Montevideo (Uruguay), I lived near Atlántida, to the north, in a semi-rural area until I was 18. Then I moved to the capital to study, and there I put down roots. I lived for three years in Ciudad Real (Spain) and three months in Pisa (Italy) while studying for my PhD. Studying and living in another country is an experience I recommend to everyone; I feel it allowed me to grow a lot. At the beginning of 2014, I returned to Montevideo, and while I miss my friends and my days in Castilla-La Mancha and Tuscany, this is the city where I want to live. I married the woman I love at the end of 2017, Ale, who complements me and helps me grow and learn every day. In 2019, we moved to Berkeley, California, United States. In 2022, we returned and today we live in El Pinar with our little Sofia.
I’ve been involved in personal projects, such as building a house with Ale in Villa Serrana (oh, we have a certificate that says we’re steel frame installation technicians). We did it independently, really getting involved. It helped us learn a lot about something very different from what we’re used to doing in our daily lives. Embarking on projects like this is highly recommended.
I enjoy spending time with family and friends, and doing outdoor activities like running, biking, fishing, kayaking, and backpacking. I’ve always loved traveling, and I particularly love combining work trips where I can take the opportunity to see new places or people, and spend time with friends and family.
You can learn more about me in this lovely article they wrote about me at the beginning of 2022.
